How do I change the name of my SharePoint?

Table of Contents

Introduction

This solutions page provides guidance for updating the name of an existing SharePoint site when a department, team, or initiative changes. Renaming a site helps ensure the site remains accurate, easy to identify, and aligned with current organizational needs or future projects.

Prerequisites

This process requires an existing SharePoint site and Owner-level permissions. If you do not have Owner access, please contact the current site owner or IT for assistance.

Instructions / Solution Steps

    1. Open the SharePoint site that needs to be renamed.
    2. Select the Settings gear icon in the upper-right corner of the site.
    3. Select Site information. If you do not see this option, you may not have the required Owner or Designer permissions.
    4. In the Site name field, enter the updated name for the site.
    5. Review any other site information, such as the site description, and update it if needed.
    6. Select Save to apply the changes.
    7. Refresh the site to confirm that the new site name appears correctly.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting

SharePoint Site URL:

  • A site’s name change does not change the site’s previous link. This is intentional, so users who already have the existing link can continue accessing the site without interruption.
  • Site Settings Not Showing: If you do not see the option to update the site name, you may not have Owner permissions. Please work with the current site owner to make the change, or submit a change of access service request if Owner access needs to be updated.
