University Password Policy

Purpose

To safeguard the University’s digital resources and the personal information of our community, Kean University enforces this Password Policy as part of our cybersecurity framework. This policy outlines expectations for password creation, usage, and management.

Policy Requirements

1. Password Confidentiality

  • Never share your password with anyone, including coworkers, supervisors, or IT personnel.
  • Kean University IT will never ask you to share your password via email, phone, or text.

2. Password Complexity

  • Passwords must be strong and difficult to guess. Use a mix of:
    • Upper and lowercase letters
    • Numbers
    • Special characters (e.g., !, @, #, $)
  • Avoid using easily guessable information such as names, birthdates, or dictionary words.

3. Password Reset and Recovery

If you forget your password or suspect your account may be compromised:

  1. Visit myapps.kean.edu and click "Forgot password?"
  2. Enter your Kean email address and select your preferred reset method.
  3. Follow the emailed instructions to set a new password.

Proactive Account Protection

As part of our collaboration with the cybersecurity community, Kean IT receives alerts when passwords associated with University accounts are found in data breaches online. If your password is identified in one of these alerts:

  • Your current password will be proactively scrambled to protect your account.
  • You will be required to reset your password using the process outlined above.
