Why Are Certain Websites Blocked?
To protect University systems and data, Kean University's Information Security team actively blocks known malicious IP addresses and websites. These sites are identified as threats based on intelligence from trusted cybersecurity sources, such as the New Jersey Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC).
How We Identify and Block Threats
Our security process ensures that only verified threats are blocked while maintaining network accessibility for legitimate use:
- Gathering Threat Data – Our security team compiles a list of suspicious IP addresses from NJCCIC and other reliable sources.
- Validation – Security analysts review and vet each entry to remove any low-confidence or unverified threats before enforcement.
- Blocking Implementation – Verified malicious IPs and websites are added to our firewall and network security systems to prevent unauthorized access and cyber threats.
- Regular Updates & Removal – If an IP address has not appeared on the threat list for four consecutive weeks, it is removed from the blocklist to ensure accuracy and minimize disruption.
What This Means for You
If you attempt to access a blocked website and receive an error message, it is likely due to security concerns. Blocking these sites helps to:
-
Prevent phishing attacks and data breaches
-
Protect University accounts from cyber threats
-
Maintain a secure and efficient IT environment
